The Best Apple Pie
This classic apple pie has a flaky crust, plenty of tart apples, and a buttery brown sugar filling that settles into every layer. Expect a deeply golden top, tender fruit, and a balanced sweetness that lets the apples remain the focus.

Turn up the heat
Let’s cook.
- Heat the oven to 425°F. Peel, core, and slice the apples; set them aside.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a paste, then add both sugars and the water. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for a few minutes until thickened.
- Line a pie pan with one pastry crust and fill it with the sliced apples. Add the second crust, forming a lattice if desired. Slowly pour the butter and sugar mixture over the top crust.
- Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven to 350°F and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
From Justin’s kitchen
Granny Smith apples give the filling plenty of tartness, but the archive also approves using another variety or a mixture of apples.
